In December 2012, a chic new hotel with a short and sweet moniker, opened on Sathorn road, Bangkok’s vibrant business district and embassy row. The W is a well-known name in the hotel industry so the usual buzz was in the air.
Many are familiar with their Whatever/Whenever philosophy, which is devoted to dealing with their guests’ requests and needs (as long as they’re legal) no matter the time or the day. Last month I spent a night there and even though I did not come up with extravagant demands, I still got a taste of the wonderful service.
The lobby was large and airy with trendy purple accents, and the first thing that caught my eye was a huge spiral metallic staircase. Check-in did not take too long, the staff was attentive and we were soon shown to our Wonderful Room.
The décor was attractive with the purple vibe still continuing. There was plenty of natural light illuminating the room and a nice view over Sathorn road through the glass windows. The W Signature Bed was comfortable, the boxing-themed pillow with the words ‘Lights Out’ was especially witty and the Muay-Thai inspired bed cover and pillow provided a nice local touch.
Another cool feature was the tablet used for controlling the room’s lighting and air conditioning. The bathroom was also luxurious with plush bathrobes, a bathtub and a separate shower stall.
Hunger then led us to the hotel’s signature restaurant that serves Thai and International cuisine, The Kitchen Table. Since it was one of their special dishes, I tried the delicious Kitchen Table Burger; and that toothpaste-tube lookalike consisted of their unique and yummy tomato paste.
After that, we headed to the swimming pool, which had an attention-grabbing metallic structure encompassing it. We later discovered that it was built to look like an eye from the hotel rooms above. A dip, a drink and an evening well spent.
The Woo bar located next to the lobby is also a hip and fabulous spot for drinks. In the lobby there was also a temporary exhibition featuring photos of Madonna, her journey, career and style.
Some more shots of the hotel..
The W Bangkok is indeed a wonderful hotel, with a cool concept and fascinating design, set in a prime location in the city center.
